Kings College Hospital – Infra-red link

King’s approached WIN in c. 2004 to provide a high reliability link to one of its satellite sites.  This approach came about after King’s encountered difficulties with the local councils in its attempts to dig up the surrounding roads to lay fibre optic cabling between this satellite and the main site.

The mandate was for a supplier to come up with a mechanism for safely and securely transmitting and receiving encrypted data from the main to the satellite site.

WIN considered King’s proposal and recommended the 1Gbps infrared link between its Ruskin Wing and the new site.  After an initial survey and subsequent confirmation of its viability, the link was put in and used in earnest shortly afterwards.

King’s successfully trialled the simultaneous transmission of standard user data (web traffic, shared files access & data transfer), application / database access, VoIP, audio and video conferencing sessions and streaming video over this link without suffering latency issues.

It was a very welcomed conclusion to a potentially very difficult situation with the new build.

King’s has subsequently approached WIN to provide a solution to a new facility opening within the next 12 months.  The mandate is similar, but the requirement this time is for a 10Gbps link, to link this site to the main building.
